Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Forecast 10/10/2023

Nick brings us the fishing forecast this week. Temperatures are dropping and fall is upon us. We just came out of a 3 day stretch of night time lows in the 30's, and the coming weeks will bring daytime highs in the low 60s. This colder weather will really push our smallmouth into their late fall and winter patterns. The water is still low and clear and as temperatures start to drop, our fish will stack into the deeper holes . Slow down your fishing and focus on these deeper areas of the river for the best success. In the trout world, we are still praying for rain. Our spring creeks like Mossy Creek, South River and Buffalo creek, along with tailwaters like the Jackson are going to be our best options until we receive substantial rain. Shenandoah National Park, Beaver Creek, and Susie Q are still closed due to low water. As we receive more rain and streams start to fill up, we will see a bump in the state stockings. Although we are in low water conditions locally, if you are willing to travel there are other areas of Virginia and West Virginia that offer better flows. These colder nights will start to slow down our terrestrial fishing on the spring creeks. You can still pick up some fish on tricos, grasshoppers, and crickets, but our fishing will become more focused on subsurface fishing as the fall progresses. Now is the time to pull out your streamer box and add variation to your patterns. Having streamer patterns of different sizes, weights, and colors are key for the fall streamer fishing ahead. Variation in your box is an important step in being ready to fish any type of water. Fall and winter are wading season. If you are in need of a new pair of waders or boots, we have some great new products, as well as sales on the previous years waders. Stop in and see us, as our staff would love to help get you fitted in a new pair before the cold is fully upon us.
